PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a memory controller, which provides a mainframe with a plurality of external volumes as one virtual volume without deteriorating write performance. SOLUTION: A virtual volume 1B in a main storage device 1 is associated with a plurality of external volumes 2B in an external storage device 2. When a mainframe 3 formats the virtual volume 1B, a control information producing section 1A4 in the main storage device 1 produces and holds control information 1C about the virtual volume 1B. Thereby, it can enhance processing performance at so-called equal-length writing in which a write size designated from the mainframe 3 matches a data size set for a write destination.
