PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detection device to detect the thickness and curling of a sheet by a single mechanism. SOLUTION: A distance A to an upper surface from a sensor and a distance B to a lower surface from another sensor are sensed by the distance sensors 15A, 15B as the sheet carried in a sheet passing guide 51 passes between a pair of the distance sensors 15. This detection device detects the thickness of the sheet by deducting a sum of the distances A, B from the sensors sensed and acquired from the previously memorized distance between the distance sensors 15A, 15B. Additionally, the detection device detects existence of the curling of the sheet and a direction of the curling from a change of A/B which is a relative value of the distances A, B provided from sensor values sensed for a prescribed period of time after the sheet starts passing.
