[Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] A mounting member 20 for the front fork assembly of a motor cycle comprises a metal tube 21 adapted to form a steering bearing housing and an attachment portion formed of sheet metal plate having a central portion 25 embracing and welded or brazed to the tube and having rearwardly extending side portions 29, 30 for securing to a forward member 19 of the motor cycle frame. The forward end of the frame is formed from a single tube bent into a loop and secured at its ends'to the upper and lower portions respectively of an upright saddle tube 10. The forward end of the loop consists of an arcuate portion 19 to which the mounting member is welded or brazed. The central portion 25 of the plate has an oval-shaped opening to facilitate the folding of the blank around the tube 21. This opening may be used for the insertion of a name-plate or transfer. The length of the plate may be such that it is equal to the length of the tube 21 and the upper and lower edges of the central portion are flush with the ends of the tube. Alternatively, the plate may be initially longer than the tube and the edges subjected to a machining operation after application to the tube. Inwardly directed ears 31, 32 are provided on the upper and lower edges of each side portion 29, 30. Adjacent edges 33, 34 of corresponding ears are welded or brazed together. The plate may be welded to the tube 21 by applying a fillet weld along a tangential junction of the tube 21 and the side portions 29, 30. The side portions have rear edges of concave shape corresponding with the curvature of the rounded corner 19 of the frame. The tube 21 is of circular cross-section and its end portions 22 are of larger internal diameter than the central portion 23 to provide a housing for the bearings of the front fork assembly. The motor-cycle tank may be secured.at its forward end by means of holes 43 in the side portions 29, 30 of the plate. |
