A magnetic recording device and a clock signal generating method are provided to generate a clock signal of optimum phase and frequency for a patterned magnetic recording medium in real time in recording. A magnetic recording device comprises a magnetic recording medium and a magnetic head for recording information on the magnetic recording medium. The magnetic recording medium is a patterned medium having concentric magnetic tracks in which recording dots are arranged in the rotational direction. The magnetic head includes a main pole(131), a magnetic field generating coil(132), a return yoke(133), and a search coil(134). The main pole is located to face the magnetic recording medium. The magnetic field generating coil generates a magnetic field delivered to the magnetic recording medium through the main pole. The return yoke receives the magnetic field delivered to the magnetic recording medium from the main pole and returns it to the magnetic field generating coil. The search coil detects changes of the magnetic flux passing through the return yoke.
