A method and apparatus are disclosed for transferring data between computers over a network such as the internet or an intranet and is particularly useful for updating web pages with informati on particularly while being viewed by a user. The method and apparatus disclosed help to reduce the amount of data that is required t o be downloaded between the server and client computers and also helps to reduce the flicker which can be experienced when internet page data is refreshed.
