PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical fiber that allows a laser beam to exit with uniform irradiation intensity while maintaining a rectangular cross-sectional form of the core. SOLUTION: The optical fiber includes: a quartz core 1a formed to have a rectangular or square cross section; a quartz clad 2 formed into a circular outline of the cross section to cover the core 1a and having a refractive index lower than the refractive index of the core 1a; and a quartz support layer 3 formed to cover the clad 2.
