PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce medium noises with respect to a manufacturing method of a magnetic recording medium. SOLUTION: In the manufacturing method of the magnetic recording medium comprising formation of a granular magnetic layer including a recording layer on an intermediate layer disposed on the upper side of a nonmagnetic substrate, the manufacturing method includes a step to form the granular magnetic layer composed of a plurality of magnetic particles of a Co alloy and oxides to magnetically separate the plurality of magnetic particles with sputtering using a target, wherein the target includes the Co alloy, one or more first oxides selected from a group composed of oxides of Si, Ti, Ta, Cr, W, and Nb, and Co oxide constructing a second oxide.
