PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic tensioner which can prevent a vibration of a mounting part, a thrash of a plunger or an endlessness transmission element, an allophone, or the like by swiftly starting up a fluid pressure at the time of start so as to suppress invasion of air into a hydraulic chamber due to leakage of a hydraulic oil during engine shutdown. SOLUTION: In the hydraulic tensioner comprising a housing 11 having a supply passage 11a supplied with a pressurized liquid and a plunger 13 slidably held by the housing 11 so as to form the hydraulic chamber 12 with the housing 11, and adding a biassing force so as to adjust a tension between specific traveling intervals of a chain rolled between a crankshaft and a cam shaft by the plunger 13, a liquid absorbing retaining member 51 is stored which absorbs a liquid to expand when it is immersed in the liquid within the hydraulic chamber 12 and also retains a state of absorbing the liquid to expand when the pressure of the liquid supplied from the supply passage 11a is decreased.
