The system has an exhaust gas outlet mounted on a burned gas exhaust line (4) to circulate a portion of exhaust gas circulating in the line. A condenser (6) is mounted on the outlet for condensing water vapor contained in the circulating exhaust gas. A water reservoir (10) collects the condensed water from the condenser. Injection unit i.e. water injector, introduces water removed from the reservoir by a pump (12) into a cylinder of an internal combustion engine (2), where the injector is placed directly in a combustion chamber of the cylinder. An independent claim is also included for a method for injecting water in a combustion chamber of a cylinder of an internal combustion engine.
