PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately facilitate self-ignition without causing premature ignition in an engine 1 provided with an intake and exhaust negative overlap (NVO) period during HCCI combustion and facilitating compression self-ignition of premixed air-fuel mixture by injecting fuel into a cylinder 2 during the period (NVO injection). SOLUTION: In a first operation zone (h1) at relatively light load side in the HCCI zone (H), NVO period is gradually shortened and NVO injection quantity is gradually reduced as engine load rises. When NVO injection demand quantity reduces with accompanying rise of load and gets less than the minimum injection quantity of an injector 18, NVO injection quantity is kept at the minimum injection quantity. Further rise of engine load is coped with by increasing degree of shortening NVO period to reduce internal EGR gas quantity at an early stage. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
