The method comprises adding water into a reservoir (3) having a precursor for forming ammonia, converting water with the precursor to ammonia, and removing an ammonia-containing material flow from the reservoir. The water is added in the form of water-containing gas flow or liquid water- containing fluid flow or in the form of aqueous solid. The water is present as water vapor in the water-containing gas flow, which is a vapor-containing air flow or vapor-containing exhaust gas flow of a self-igniting internal combustion engine. An independent claim is included for a device for providing ammonia.
