<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust emission control system and a method for controlling the exhaust emission control system capable of accurately estimating PM deposition quantity during deposition of PM and during regeneration control and preventing damage of a filter caused by restriction of fuel consumption quantity for DPF regeneration and over deposition of PM in the exhaust emission control system provided with DPF. <P>SOLUTION: Differential pressure increase velocity Vpi is calculated by multiplying deposition quantity increase velocity Vai calculated based on engine operation states Ne, Q by a first coefficient K1. Deposition quantity reduction velocity Vad is calculated by multiplying differential pressure decrease velocity Vpd calculated based on filter temperature index temperature Ti by a second coefficient K2. Differential pressure estimation valueΔPe is calculated by integrating difference between the differential pressure increase velocity Vpi and the differential pressure decrease velocity Vpd.
