<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical anisotropic substance and an optical anisotropic substance dry gel which are flexible and have sufficient mechanical strength and toolability. <P>SOLUTION: The optical anisotropic substance consists of a gel wherein a three-dimensional mesh formed by compounding a water-soluble organic polymer and laminar clay menerals contains water.
