The present invention is related to the recovery of coagulants and/or flocculants used for treating water polluted with surface and/or emulsified greases and oils, and to the process for the application thereof in such waters. The recovery process, also known as regeneration process, is performed by the hot or cold acid dissolution of the sludges generated or added to the treating process. Said sludges are intended to clarify the polluted water by means of adsorbing or absorbing the colloidal particulate material and the surface and/or emulsified grease and oils. The inventive process is carried out using organic and inorganic acids for dissolving the metallic ion/ions salt/salts so as to allow the high concentration of grease and/or oil to be agglomerated and separated in an easily separable organic base. In addition, the aqueous phase contains from about 70-95% of the metallic ion/ions salt/salts used as coagulants an/or flocculants, said last phase is recycled in the process for tr eating waters with grease and/or oils or reused in further processes. Said regeneration process turns the physicochemical processes into more rentable and environmentally friendly processes.
