PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of preventing a copy-prohibited document from being copied, without having to read the document to produce image data. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 10 includes an optical system 42 for reading an image on a recording medium; a copy-prohibited medium detecting sensor 68 for detecting a copy-prohibited recording medium; and a controller 60 that controls to inhibit copying of a recording medium, when it is detected by the copy-prohibited medium detecting sensor 68 that the relevant recording medium is copy-prohibited, before the image on the recording medium is read by the optical system 42.
