<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To project an image having high contrast with a simple configuration, in a projector using a reflection type liquid crystal panel. <P>SOLUTION: A projection image display device includes a first polarizing beam splitter which has a periodical structure whose period is shorter than a visible light wavelength and such a characteristic that S-polarization is reflected and P-polarization is transmitted in red light and blue light. The first polarizing beam splitter reflects the S-polarization of the blue light, to guide it to a reflection type liquid crystal panel for blue and transmits the P-polarization emitted from the reflection type liquid crystal panel for blue, and to guide it to a projection optical system. The first polarizing beam splitter transmits the P-polarization of the red light, to guide it to a reflection type liquid crystal display element for red and reflects the S-polarization emitted from the reflection type liquid crystal display element for red, and to guide it to the projection optical system. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
