The system has a microphone (10) installed at a low voltage compartment of a switch panel. The microphone detects a sound signal generated by an electric short-circuit defect between a conductor and the earth or between conductors. A processing unit processes the detected sound signal. An activating unit activates an earthing switch (42) i.e. ST arc killer, which bypasses the defect by closing. The activating unit has a magnetic ventouse (33) associated to a compression or tension spring (30). An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting and suppressing an electric short-circuit defect between a conductor and the earth or between conductors that cause high power electric arc in one of cells of an average or high voltage switch panel.
