PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safety device of an elevator, performing an emergency stop of a car in a vertical guideway or an inclined horizontal guideway when a rope is broken or the like. SOLUTION: In an elevator, two straight vertical guideways 2a-2b for vertical movement are arranged in the right-to-left direction, and horizontal guideways 3a, 3b having a curved section or an inclined section and coupling upper and lower terminating ends of the two vertical guideways 2a-2b are arranged above and below the two vertical guideways 2a-2b to constitute a circulation passage for allowing the car to be circulated. The safety device of the elevator comprises: electric first emergency stop means 6a, 6b which are installed in the car and work on vertical rails 5a-5d provided in the vertical guideways 2a-2b along the car moving locus; and an electric second emergency stop means 12 which is installed in the car and works on horizontal rails 11a, 11b provided in the horizontal guideways 3a, 3b along the car moving locus.
