PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element capable of exerting a function as a multi-photon element well by sufficiently generating carriers (charge) from an intermediate layer in driving the element by applying a voltage between a positive electrode and a negative electrode without depending on a formation state of a charge mobile body in the intermediate layer (intermediate electrode layer); and a method of driving an organic electroluminescent element. SOLUTION: In the organic electroluminescent element 1, a plurality of first luminescent units 5 and second luminescent units 6 each having an organic functional layer having at least an organic luminescent layer 8 (13) are stacked between a positive electrode 3 and a negative electrode 4, and each area between the respective luminescent units 5 and 6 is partitioned by an intermediate electrode layer 9.
