An exhaust gas treating apparatus adapted for removal of mercury and nitrogen oxides contained in an exhaust gas from boiler with an ammonia denitration catalyst, comprising a powdery ammonium chloride supply part (101) capable of supplying ammonium chloride in powdery form fitted to either the vicinity of entrance of an economizer (15) provided along a combustion gas flue of boiler or an economizer bypass part (15a), or both, so that the supplied powdery ammonium chloride is sublimed by combustion gas to thereby feed hydrogen chloride and ammonium into the flue (102). The exhaust gas treating apparatus further comprises a liquid ammonium chloride supply part (110) capable of supplying ammonium chloride in liquid form fitted to either the vicinity of entrance of the economizer (15) or the economizer bypass part (15a), or both, so that ammonium chloride can also be supplied by the liquid ammonium chloride supply part (110) to thereby attain, through evaporation of the supplied liquid ammonium chloride by combustion gas, jointly feeding of hydrogen chloride and ammonium into the flue (102).
