An automatic warehouse is provided to prevent collision between article and shelf because the distance between the shelf and driving unit is accurately measured. An automatic warehouse comprises a rack(2) which comprises a shelf housing some articles, a transport unit which lets articles come in and out the shelf, and a controller which controls operation of the transport unit. The transport unit comprises a driving unit in which article is mounted and which gets in and out the shelf, and a distance sensor(29) which is installed at the insert unit inserted into the shelf of the moving unit and measures the distance between the insert portion of the driving unit and the shelf. The controller limits movement of the transport unit when the distance measured by the distant sensor is smaller than the threshold.
