An imaging apparatus is provided to turn off illuminating unit and control the quantity of light based on sensed result by sensing situations in which illumination is unnecessary. An imaging apparatus(100) comprises: a CCD(Charge Coupled Device,102) detecting reflected light from a subject; a lighting-emitting part which irradiates the subject while the CCD consecutively detects the reflected light; a side light part(112) detecting the intensity level of the subject according to the reflected light detected by the CCD; and a light intensity control part(122) controlling the quantity of light irradiated in the lighting-emitting part. The light intensity control part controls the lighting-emitting part to irradiate at the other quantity of light while the reflected light is detected by the CCD. The light intensity control part controls the quantity of light of the lighting-emitting part to be reduced or into 0 based on the intensity level of the subject irradiated in the other quantity of the light.
