1400978 Ethylenically unsaturated ester CONTINENTAL CAN CO Inc 10 April 1973 [10 April 1972 13 Nov 1972] 17025/73 Headings C3B and C3P Ethylenically unsaturated #-hydroxy esters, stable to premature gelation and which are polymerizable by ionizing radiation, are prepared by reacting a polyepoxide containing at least 2 epoxy groups per molecule with anα,#-ethylenically unsaturated C 3-6 monocarboxylic acid in the presence of a tin halide, e.g. SnCl 2 . The tin halide may be used at 0À1-1% by wt. of the reaction mixture. An alkaline catalyst such as a tertiary amine, e.g. benzyldimethylamine is also present. The tin salt may be deactivated by treatment with phosphoric acid. The ester may be polymerized by ultraviolet radiation, optionally in the presence of other ethylenically unsaturated materials, e.g. polyethylene glycol diacrylate or pentaerythritol tetraacrylate. |
