An exhaust gas treatment system for an internal combustion engine (1) reduces the amount of NOx in exhaust gas flowing through an exhaust passage (6) of the engine (1). The system has a plasma generator (12) including two electrodes (13, 14) spaced away from each other in the exhaust passage (6), a high-frequency power supply (16) connected to one of the electrodes (13), and a NOx absorber (15) provided between the electrodes (13, 14).
