An apparatus for canceling interference in a multi-hop relay wireless communication system and a method thereof are provided to increase the number of hops of lower nodes in a base station to reduce interference influencing an adjacent cell. A backbone transceiver(621) receives an interference amount from adjacent cells through a backbone. A controller(607) compares the interference amount with a reference interference amount to determine whether to expand hops of lower relay stations. When the interference amount is larger than the reference interference amount, hop expansion is instructed to the lower relay stations to reduce the interference amount influencing the adjacent cells.
