Disclosed is a separator for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries, which is characterized by being obtained by processing a polyolefin rein with fluorine and having a contact angle with a nonaqueous electrolyte solution of not more than 400 and a shutdown temperature of not more than 170°C. Also disclosed is a multilayer separator for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries, which is composed of a plurality of layers and at least one of the layers is composed of the above-described separator for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries. These separators for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries have both good electrolyte solution-holding property and appropriate shutdown property.
