PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an application starting method capable of specifying and starting an application program executably incorporated into a communication terminal on the receiving side when a session of an SIP is established by connecting from a communication terminal or server on the calling side to the communication terminal on the receiving side, to provide the communication terminal, and to provide the server. SOLUTION: The communication terminal 10A or servers 25, 30 on the calling side write application starting information including information for specifying the application program to be started by the communication terminal 10B on the receiving side in a message of the SIP for transmission to be transmitted to the communication terminal on the receiving side. The communication terminal on the receiving side receives the message in which the application starting information is written from the communication terminal or server on the calling side, selects and starts the application program specified by the application starting information from among a plurality of application programs based on the application starting information.
