PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader and image forming apparatus which are reduced in size, and prevent a read image from getting dirty during fixed reading. SOLUTION: A transparent film member 18 is provided in a position corresponding to one end portion of platen glass 6 of the bottom face 1A of a pressing plate unit 1, the transparent film member being positioned between a sheet carried by a sheet carrier and the platen glass 6. The pressing plate unit 1 has a pressing member 20 for pressing the conveyed sheet to a position facing the contact-type image sensor 16 of the film member 18, and a portion other than the portion facing the contact-type image sensor 16 of the film member 18 and a portion for pressing the sheet of the pressing member 20 are made white.
