PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a broadcast receiver in which character information and a caption can be read, respectively, when the display timing of a video image including the character information and that of the caption coincide with each other by shifting the display timing of the caption to avoid the overlapped display of the character information and the caption, and a broadcast receiving method. SOLUTION: The broadcast receiver is provided with output means (26, 28) each of which outputs the video image signal and the caption signal which are separated from the received broadcast signal at output timing indicated by timing information included in the video image signal and in the caption signal, respectively, and control means (22, 37 to 39) each of which shifts the output timing of the caption by a predetermined time set beforehand when the output timing for outputting the video image signal including the character information and that for outputting the caption signal coincide with each other.
