PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly and correctly place an original onto a contact glass and prevent glaring during work. SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus 10 includes an original reading section 20 which reads image information of an original P1, and an image forming section 30 which is disposed continuously under the original reading section 20 and carries out predetermined image forming processing based on the image information read by the original reading section 20. The original reading section 20 includes an image reading section chassis 12 on its upper surface, with a contact glass 24 on which the original P1 is placed with its original surface being turned downward, an openable and closable original pressing member 13 which presses the original P1 placed on the contact glass 24, and an optical system unit 23 which optically scans the surface of the original P1 placed on the contact glass 24 and reads it as an original image. The body of the image reading section has a top plate 122 with an opening in which the contact glass is inserted. The top plate 122 has a surface colored with a dark tint.
