PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To vertically move a workpiece smoothly and improve responsiveness regardless of a relatively simple configuration. SOLUTION: This lifting device is provided with: an input shaft 20; an output shaft 22; a suspending means 24 for suspending a workpiece; cones 11 rotating while revolving; a gear change ring 12 frictionally engaged with the cones 11; means 34, 35 for advancing/retracting the gear change ring 12; a means for changing torque applied to the output shaft 22 in accordance with the advancing/retracting position of the gear change ring 12; and an energizing means 32 for energizing the gear change ring 12. (A) The advancing/retracting position of the gear change ring 12 determined by the energizing means 32 maintains equilibrium of force by making load correspond to torque. By changing the advancing/retracting position of the gear change ring 12 from the (A) state, the load is not made to correspond to the torque so as to release the equilibrium of force.
