New polyisobutyl derivatives (I) consist of a polyisobutyl moiety bonded to the heteroatom of a cyclic ammonio or acyclic or cyclic phosphonio, oxonio, sulfonio or selenio group. Polyisobutyl derivatives of formula PIB-X +>. Y ->(I) are new. PIB : polyisobutyl; X +>N-bonded 5-7 membered saturated, partially saturated or aromatic heterocyclic ammonio group (optionally containing additional heteroatoms and optionally substituted (os)), -N +>R 1>R 2>R 3>, -P +>R 4>R 5>R 6>, -O +>R 7>R 8>, -S +>R 9>R 1> 0>or -Se +>R 1> 1>R 1> 2>; R 1>- R 1> 2>H, alkyl, -A-OA, hydroxyalkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, -A-aryl or Het (where hydrocarbyl or heterocyclyl moieties are os); or PR 4>R 5>, OR 7>R 8>, SR 9>R 1> 0>or SeR 1> 1>R 1> 1>heterocycle (os and optionally containing additional heteroatoms); Y ->halide anion or Lewis acid-Lewis base adduct of formula (M aZ b) ->; M : B, Al, Ti, V, Fe, Zn, Cu, Sn, Ga, Zr, Mo, Nb, Sb or In; Z : F, Cl oder Br; a : 1-3; b : 2-10; An independent claim is included for the production of homo- or copolymers of cationically polymerizable olefinically unsaturated monomer(s) (II) by polymerization in presence of (I), provided that in the case of (I; Y ->= halide or Lewis acid-Lewis base adduct in which a = 1) the polymerization is carried out in presence of a Lewis acid.
