[Also in Groups VIII and XVII] in a method of winding a web of paper, roofing felt or like material into a succession of rolls, the web is fed to a coreless winding device whilst being continuously measured and is severed automatically without interrupting the feeding of the web, to produce rolls of a predetermined weblength. As shown, a web is drawn over a measuring cylinder 1 by cylinders 23, 24, such that when a predetermined length of web has been fed, the web is severed by a cutter 20, 21 synchronized with the cylinder 1. The leading edge of the severed web is fed by endless belts 7 towards rollers 8 and curved plates (not shown) which deflect the web towards driven winding cylinders 16 and 17 rotatably mounted in rocking levers 14 and 15, such that the web is then deflected downwards to initiate the winding of a roll, the web being pressed against the bands 7 by a pressure cylinder 37. Increase in diameter of the roll causes upward displacement of cylinders 16 and 17, while the rollers 8 are retained by a locking device until winding is complete; whereupon the locking device is released by mechanism actuated in synchronism with the cylinder 1 and the web is severed by the cutter 20, 21. The locking device releases the rollers 8 which rock downwards against the action of a counterbalance 12. The wound roll is then fed by bands 27, to a position beneath a knife 33 actuated by the roll through a lever 31, 32 to cut a length from a suspended wrapping strip unwound from a roll 28. The cut strip is draped over the wound roll which is later rotated, by passage between rollers 26 and 34, to wrap the strip around the roll. The roller 34 pivots against the action of a spring about an axis 35 to allow the wrapped roll to drop on to a table 38. |
