The device has a control device (114) controlling valve adjustment units e.g. stroke adjustment device (112) to adjust air quantity of an engine (101) i.e. gasoline combustion engine, so that the target suction air quantity is achieved when atmospheric pressure exceeds a threshold value. The control device controls opening characteristic of an inlet valve (105) to achieve a specific condition. The control device controls an electronically controlled throttle valve (104) such that the air quantity achieves the target intake air quantity when the pressure does not exceed the threshold value. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling suction air of an engine.
