PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable an imaging element to execute the optimum exposure according to the light emitting pattern of a light source. SOLUTION: The endoscope system 10 includes a light source unit 21, a light guide 31, the imaging element 32, an imaging element driving circuit 33, and a photodetection part 34. The imaging element is a CMOS imaging element. The light guide 31 extends from the light source unit 21 to the distal end of an insertion tube 38, a part of the light guide 31 is branched inside a connector 37, and the branched light guide is connected to the photodetection part 34. The photodetection part 34 detects whether the light emitting pattern of the light source unit 21 is pulse light emission or regular light emission, and the detected light emitting pattern is notified to the imaging element driving circuit 33. When the light emitting pattern is the pulse light emission, the imaging element driving circuit 33 makes the imaging element 32 execute global exposure. When the light emitting pattern is the regular light emission, the imaging element driving circuit 33 allows the imaging element 32 to execute a line exposure. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
