PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which can be miniaturized. SOLUTION: In a printer 100, respective color toner images formed by image forming units 11Y to 11K for yellow, magenta, cyan and black colors are multiply transferred to paper S conveyed by a conveying belt 12. In the printer 100, when detection of positional deviation is not carried out, a photoreceptor drum 1 and the conveying belt 12 are driven to reversely transfer residual toner on the conveying belt 12 to the photoreceptor drum 1 in each image forming unit. The residual toner reversely transferred to the photoreceptor drum 1 is removed from the photoreceptor drum 1 by a cleaner 6 and stored in a storage part 7. When detection of the positional deviation is carried out, reverse transfer is inhibited, and a toner pattern for detecting positional deviation formed on the conveying belt 12 is removed from the conveying belt 12 by a cleaner 70 as residual toner.
