PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively use a storage area of an image memory on a transmission side and to easily recognize contents at a glance on a reception side even when a transmission error occurs during the transmission of document images having a plurality of pages. SOLUTION: When it is determined that the transmission of image data is successful in a success/failure determination part 75, a memory management part 77 reduces (including deletion or compression) the storage capacity of the image memory 37 for the image data related to the page successfully transmitted. When it is determined that the transmission of the image data fails in the success/failure determination part 75, a retransmission transmittal letter preparation part 79 reads the image data related to the page immediately before the failed page from the image memory 37, adds notice information that a top page related to the retransmission is to be transmitted soon to the read image data, and thus prepares the image data related to a retransmission transmittal letter page.
