An inspection and/or determination system and method for the hull of a ship are provided to detect the paint layer thickness and surface roughness of the hull exterior, and to scan the hull exterior surface continuously while moving inspection/determination unit along the hull. An inspection and/or determination system comprises one or more float/underwater type inspection/determination/measurement units(20), a redivision unit functionally cooperating with the float/underwater type inspection/determination/measurement units, and a grid or network(14) with a square grid redivision unit or individual unit. The system inspects or determines the state of the exterior surface(12) of a hull(10) by using the grid or network.
