Glass fibres are sized, gathered into an endless strand and formed into a yarn, the size being an aqueous composition containing 4 to 12% polyvinyl acetate, 0.4 to 2.0% of an unsaturated organo-silicon compound and 0,5 to 2,0% of a hydrophilic colloid, the percentages being by weight. The organo silicon compound may have an unsaturated hydrocarbon group containing less than 8 carbon atoms and two or three hydrolisable groups such as chloro, bromo, methoxy, or ethoxy groups. Compounds specified are vinyl trichlorosilane and vinyl tris (beta methoxy) ethoxy silane. The hydrophilic colloid may be dextrinised starch, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl methyl ether or an ethylene oxide condensate. Optional additives specified include polyethylene glycols, polypropylene glycols, glycerol triacetate, tetraethylene pentamine reacted to contain five allyl methallyl side chains as a direct substitution on the nitrogen groups, tetra ethylene pentamine stearic acid condensate solubilised with acetic acid, the diamide of coconut oil fatty acid, acetone, arylalkyl polyether alcohol condensates, dioctyl esters of sodium sulphosuccinate and sodium lauryl sulphate. The fibres may be staple or continuous filament.
|
