PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer which saves users' waiting time for printing and reduces the amount of memory used for red-eye position detection processing, and to provide its control method. SOLUTION: The printer includes: a reduction image generation means for reducing the size of an original image to generate a reduction image; a first red-eye position detection means for detecting red-eye positions based on the reduction image; a storage execution means for temporarily storing some parts of printing image data into a printing data storage device to print images based on the original image; a second red-eye position detection means for detecting red-eye positions based on the image data stored in the printing data storage device; and a red-eye correction means for correcting red-eyes based on the red-eye positions detected by the first red-eye position detection means and the second red-eye position detection means.
