PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrially highly practical method for producing dimethyl trans-1,4-cyclohexanedicaroxylate which has a high yield and excels in productivity, in the isomerization reaction of the cis form of dimethyl 1,4-cyclohexanedicaroxylate (HDMT) to the trans form. SOLUTION: As the isomerization catalyst, a strongly basic tertiary amine compound is used. The base dissociation constant of the strongly basic tertiary amine compound is preferably not less than 9.0. The strongly basic tertiary amine compound is preferably at least one kind selected from the group consisting of 1,5-diazabicyclo[4,3,0]non-5-ene, 1,8-diazabicyclo[5,4,0]undec-7-ene, and 4-dimethylaminopyridine.
