METHOD OF CONVERTING HALL-HEROULT CELLS TO INERT ANODE CELLSFOR ALUMINUM PRODUCTION

A method is provided for retrofitting conventional aluminum smelting cells ( 1) with inert anode assemblies (12) which replace the consumable carbon anodes (2) of the cell (1). The inert anode assemblies (12) are pre-heated prior to introduction into the operating cell. Insulation (18) may be installed for reducing heat loss during operation of the retrofit cells.
