Disclosed is a sodium ion rechargeable battery that can exhibit a very stable potential during discharge in the repetition of charge and discharge. Also disclosed is a negative electrode active material for a sodium ion rechargeable battery that can realize efficient doping and de-doping of sodium ions for use in the sodium ion rechargeable battery. The sodium ion rechargeable battery comprises a positive electrode comprising a positive electrode active material that can dope and de-dope the sodium ion, a negative electrode comprising a negative electrode active material containing, as a simple substance or as a main component, a vitreous carbon material that can dope and de-dope the sodium ion, and an electrolyte containing sodium ions. The negative electrode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte sodium ion rechargeable battery contains a vitreous carbon material as a simple substance or a main component.
