PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a headway distance maintenance supporting apparatus and headway distance maintenance supporting method properly supporting running of a vehicle. SOLUTION: A control device 3 is configured so as to control each section to enter a deceleration support control state from a constant headway distance control state (state transition G) when at least any one of predetermined conditions is established in the constant headway distance control state. Namely, a deceleration support control state is not released while a constant headway distance control is released based on detected running environment of the vehicle or based on detected operation of a driver. Then the deceleration support control for decelerating the vehicle can be maintained by preventing the vehicle from being accelerated by the constant headway distance control. Thereby, running of the vehicle can be properly supported in response to the running environment and the operation of the driver, because there are a lot of running scenes for supporting deceleration while preventing vehicle behavior which is not intended by the driver.
