PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface modifier of metal oxide particles, and a surface modification method of metal oxide particles using the same. SOLUTION: The surface modifier comprises an alkyl silane polyol either alone or as a mixture with an alkylalkoxysilane, provided that the alkyl silane polyol contains a cyclic alkyl group capable of imparting steric hindrance. The surface modification method of metal oxide particles comprises formation of a surface modifier coating on hydrophilic surfaces of the metal oxide particles through chemical bonding so as to modify the surfaces into reactive, hydrophobic surfaces or into reactive surfaces exhibiting both hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity. Selective use of the alkyl silane polyol with a specific chemical structure inhibits coagulation, which is caused by condensation of the surface modifier itself during a condensation reaction at an elevated temperature that is conducted for inducing chemical bonding of the metal oxide and the modifier, and also stabilizes silicon-hydroxyl (Si-OH) bond so as to achieve surface-modified metal oxide particles with a uniform particle size distribution.
