PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling a short side taper in a mold for continuous casting, with which the surface quality of a cast slab can be secured and casting to surely prevent a breakout is made possible, by ensuring a suitable shell thickness not only to the short side, but also to the long side corner part. SOLUTION: In a continuous casting process for continuously casting molten steel at casting speed in the range of 1.0-3.0 m/min, the tapered degree of the short side of a mold 1 for continuous casting, is controlled according to the casting speed of the molten steel to be cast and a super-heat quantity. In this way, the enlargement of the air-gap 5a at a long side corner part is prevented by restraining the rotation of the cast slab corner 6, and the thickness of the solidified shell 4a at the long side corner part can be secured. Further, in the case of using the mold short side whose surface is worked into multi-steps or curved-shape, since excessive contact of the solidified shell 4b with the inner surface of the mold short side near the lower end of the mold, is eliminated, in comparison with the mold short side having a straight-shape, it is preferable that the thickness of the solidified shell can be increased without causing the breakage of the solidified shell 4 nor causing wear of the inner surface of the mold.
