PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that a blank space in a trailing edge of a sheet can not be set when using the sheet whose leading edge can not be detected by a leading edge detection sensor. SOLUTION: Whether or not the sheet 5 to be fed is a sheet whose leading edge can not be detected by the leading edge detection sensor 330 is discriminated. If the sheet 5 to be fed is not the sheet whose leading edge can not be detected, a carriage 23 is moved in a main scanning direction to move the leading edge detection sensor 330 to a leading edge detection position so as to detect the leading edge of the sheet 5, thereby setting the blank space in the trailing edge of the sheet 5 based on the detected leading edge position of the sheet and sheet size. If the sheet 5 to be fed is the sheet whose leading edge can not be detected, the sheet 5 is stopped at a nip portion of a transport belt 31 and a pressure roller 36, and then the leading edge position of the sheet 5 is determined with respect to a stop position, and the blank space in the trailing edge of the sheet 5 is determined based on the determined leading edge position of the sheet and the sheet size.
