PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a radioactive waste cutting apparatus capable of cutting radioactive waste of different shapes and thicknesses in both vertical and horizontal directions, and of not producing secondary waste at cutting, and to provide a method for the apparatus. SOLUTION: The radioactive waste cutting apparatus 1 includes: a cutting unit including a bandsaw 30, a vertical drive mechanism 12, which relatively moves the bandsaw 30 and one side of radioactive waste with respect to the other side in the vertical direction which is the longitudinal direction of the radioactive waste; a horizontal drive mechanism 13, which relatively moves the bandsaw 30 and one side of the radioactive waste against the other side in the horizontal direction, orthogonal to the vertical direction; and a cutting direction switching mechanism, having a guide 41 for switching the cutting direction of the bandsaw 30 between the vertical and horizontal directions.
