In the method at least two images (KX1, KX2, KX3) and (KY1, KY2, KY3) of a moving subject (X) and a reference area (Y) in its immediate vicinity are taken synchronously at different moments in time, in such a way that, in each of the images taken of the subject (X), the subject (X) is illuminated mutually essentially in different ways, for example, by illuminating the subject in different ways through patterned masks, for example sine-patterned masks, and, in the images taken of the reference area (Y) in the vicinity of the subj ect (X), the reference area (Y) is illuminated in mutually essentially the same way, for example, through an unpatterned mask. The images (KY1, KY2, KY3) of the reference area (Y) taken under mutually essentially the same kind of illumination are used to position the image areas corresponding to the same area of the subject in the images of the subject (X) taken under different kinds of illumination.
