The device (19) has a guided transport element i.e. suction beam (20), movable forward and backward over a transport stroke and non-positively taking hold of a case (1) exiting a roll-down apparatus (16) during synchronous speed movement. A transport element drive unit (22, 23, 23a) responsive to a control profile is variable in dependence on a format height referred to a transport direction. The drive unit produces a uniform end position of the transport element at a hand-over point (31), and a changing transport stroke commensurate with the format height.
